The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended the implementation of nation-wide mobile number portability (MNP) by June 2009. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will come out with the road map for MNP implementation in rest of the country soon.

The telecom regulator has forwarded to the DoT the draft Request For Proposal (RFP) for selection of an operator which will be licensed for providing and operating end to end MNP solution in the country.

Further, the telecom regulator has recommended that the MNP Clearing House Administrator (MCHA) should be licensed through a competitive bidding process.

TRAI had constituted a panel consisting of representatives from DoT, TEC, all service providers and associations for deliberating on the methodology for the selection of the neutral third party or parties who could act as MCHA.

The committee submitted its interim report on certain key issues, including draft RFP for selection of an operator. The draft RFP has also been posted on the TRAI’s website for comments/ feedback from the vendors who are interested in providing MNP solution.
