Rural areas have high subscriber additions rate

Despite a moderately lower contribution to the overall teledensity of the country, rural areas have succeeded to beat the metros with a comparatively high subscriber additions rate. Based on the TRAI figures, the four metros together added 10.3 million subscribers in the first nine months of 2008, while the rural areas added over 11.3 million.

Minister A. Raja reacts

Communications and Information Technology Minister A. Raja on Tuesday said all charges against him regarding corruption and favouritism in spectrum allocation were “politically motivated” and that he had only followed recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in giving spectrum to 2G mobile service providers.

MVNO guidelines to be unveiled soon

The guidelines for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to launch operations in India are set to be unveiled soon. A committee set up by department of telecom (DoT) to examine sector regulator TRAI’s recommendations for allowing MVNOs in India has endorsed the regulator’s proposals with some minor changes.

Axe on telemarketers

Telecom regulator Trai has said that the telephone connections of over 10,000 telemarketers have been disconnected for calling mobile subscribers registered with the ‘National Do Not Call’ (DNC) registry. Of those, 8,602 disconnections are of unregistered telemarketers. Currently, India has about 20,000 registered telemarketers and an equal number of unregistered players.
