The nascent Blu-ray audio-visual market is set to get more competitive with Sony India entering the segment with the launch of its Blu-ray range at an aggressive starting price of Rs 9,990 .

It is targeting a 60 per cent share of the Blue-ray audio-visual products market by 2012, said the MD of Sony India, Masaru Tamagawa. The Blu-ray player market is fairly new in India with Philips, LG and Panasonic entering the market for the first time last year.

“The Blu-ray market is expected to grow to five lakh units by FY2012. We aim to capture 60 per cent and sell more than three lakh units by 2012,” said Tamagawa.

Sony’s Tamagawa said, “We have to create a new category. We intend to spend Rs 10 crore for the advertising and communication for our Blu-ray products this year. Blu-ray is a perfect complement for the fast growing HDTV category which has already clocked cumulative sales of 3.2 million units.”
