    Honda City is superb car with great efficiency and stunning look. It wins hands down against most of its’ competitors including Vento. Vento’s design is mundane and the stamp of Volkswagon is somehow missing. The only negative with City is its low ground clearance. New Verna comes close to it in design..

    @Amit

    The Ex-Showroom price of each car varies depending on state and city.

    Thanks for the comparison. Just wanted to know the correct price of the City Auto transmission told to me by a delaer in Mumbai is 12+ lacs on road (with company registration) – much higher than what you have mentioned in the comparison – City 1.5 S AT … Rs 9,04,000 which I understand could be the ex-showroom.

    Could you tell me the on-road price (with company registration) of the vento Auto transmission. Thanks.

    Mr. Raghavan,
    I need 2 buy a new car and i’m considering these 2 here. I am doing a job and my office is quite nearby-about 4-5 kms and i get to drive through some really bad roads and an occasional high traffic.
    Diesel is more preferable but petrol might also work.
    Which car will you suggest to me?

    Dear Aniruddha,
    Thanks to you too for sharing hands-on experience. Such comments from real users makes the review complete.

    Dear Mr. Raghavan,
    Some more points to your analysis. I took the delivery of my Silver Petrol Highline Manual Transmission on 4th Oct. from Pune till today (11-10-2010) I have clocked 1500 Kms. The central locking in the Vento Highline is not what is written in the manual. Owners Manual (Page 35) says that central locking can be opened from inside after trying more than once, but in reality it opens immediately at first shot from inside on any door. The second day I took my car to Kolhapur and the drivers side window started making a screeching sound while coming down. VW Kolhapur dealer rectified the problem but such problem on the second day was not expected from VW. Handling is good no doubt about that both at high speed and low speed. Shock absorbers are pretty good too It took the rough pretty well. Climatronic AC is also sufficent would like to see how it perfoms in summers though. You are right about the rear view very limited while taking a reverse. Front number plate is fixed with 2 screws and is slightly curved maybe because of the pressure created one screw has come off. It would have been better if it was fixed with 4 screws. I also took a test drive of Honda city before booking the Vento but till now inspite for a few minor problems faced I tend to agree with you that Vento is a good choice.

    Thanks a lot Mr. Raghvan for your superb analysis !

    Just test drove the VW Vento trendline yesterday (25th Sept 2010) after using the Honda City ZX Exi for 3 days. I would like to record the following points:(1) Exteriors: I think the VW Vento looks sportier and smarter.(2) Vento mirrors not retractable, which could be deadly in Pune traffic. Since the ratio of 2 wheelers to 4 wheelers in Pune is 4:1, damage to mirrors is inevitable.(3)Lights: Equally good.
    (4)Mileage: Both cars claim similar mileage of 16.5mpl.(5) My height is just under 6 ft. The steering wheel clearance of the City is just above my knee in the upper position. The Vento clearance appears better.(6) A/C vents: The Vento Trendline has rear vents in addition to front vents. The City 1.5EMT does not have rear vents.(7) The Vento interiors appear to be better with an armrest for the driver added. (8) All 4 doors are locked and released by the driver in the Vento TL; not so in the City. (9) Rear view is poor in the Vento. The rear glass is much smaller and raised. Kerb view is non-existant. City much better all-round view. (10) After appreciating the Vento, I was told about a waiting period of 3 months. The VW gives full-page ads with audio in newspapers and ythen wants you to wait for 3 months? Poor strategy ! Centre claims at least 150 purchases expected per month. (11) Base City 1.5 EMT is 9.2L on road in Pune (with insurance of Rs 20,000), but base VW Vento is 8.2L (metallic color) on road (with an insurance of Rs 35,000!!). Apparently insurance is negotiable. (12) Ground clearance of both cars is the same: 160 mm, which means irregular speed-breakers may touch the bottom. (13) Vento needs once-yearly maintenance at Rs 5000-8000/ year. Car is 60% Indian made. which means spares are not cheap. City should be similar. (14) Handling: With the short duration of test-drive, City appears better in driving pleasure. Apparently, Vento behaves better at higher speed.(15) The City has turning indicating lever on the RHS and wiper control lever on the LHS; both reversed on the Vento. (16) The Reverse gear on the Vento is in the opposite direction to the City.
    FOR PRICE,NOVELTY,REPUTATION,INTERIORS ETC, I WOULD CHOOSE THE VENTO!
