RIM finally speaks on security issue

Security RIMResearch in Motion (RIM), the company that provides BlackBerry service in India has asked Indian officials to take action against other service providers with similar encryption. The company said that lowering the encryption level of BlackBerry services in India will not solve the security concerns.

The Canadian company, RIM, has around 100,000 customer base in the country. The premium services offered by company have been severely affected due to its wrangling with Department of Telecommunication (DoT) over encryption level.

RIM has said that it was being singled out by DoT officials and said that there were several other companies providing similar services to customers with similar encryption level.

How’s that sound if a unique security apparatus could be installed in homes that can not only detect any unwanted presence happening inside the residence but also can alert the owner of the residence through a pop-up message which will be displayed on the computer screen or a SMS flashed on a cell phone anytime and anywhere. Something similar has now been invented by IIT-Delhi students which have termed the new technology as ‘Home Security Application’.

This unique innovation is designed by a team consisting of students from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi using a wireless sensor network. The new technology was recently on display at the Annual Open House of IIT, Delhi.

Procall launches India’s first digital PTT service

Procall, wireless communication solution providers, on Thursday announced the launch of its next generation digital wireless (radio) solution featuring Motorola’s Integrated Digital Enhanced Network technology in Bangalore, making it the first digital PTT service in India.

PTT communication (also called dispatch) on radio frequency allows unlimited number of users in a closed user group communicate with team members for unlimited time at a fixed monthly charge, K Satyanarayana, CEO, Procall said.

Users can talk with one or many or all members in the group instantly at the push of a button. This would help business houses working in teams or those involved in BPO services, airlines, hospitals, taxi or transport fleet management, call centres, courier services to keep constantly in touch with their employees and monitor them even on field. BlackBerry security issue makes e-commerce insecure

“The security agencies are saying that we should have access to data that are being encrypted by services like BlackBerry on mobile phones and then decrypted when the phone reaches its nominated destination,” the source added. RIM does not, or has not been asked, to do this in any other country but is considering the matter.

The case, meanwhile, has opened a Pandora’s box in India. Operators note that if BlackBerry services are banned, security agencies could even target various e-commerce applications – especially money transfers – that use encryption.

Encryption is the process of converting information into a form that is unintelligible to anyone except holders of a specific cryptographic key (the intended recipient). This will make e-commerce virtually impossible. Read the rest of this entry »

Wireless solution to improve agro supply chain

Infosys Technologies Ltd said it has partnered with ACDI/VOCA, a non-profit international development organization that promotes broad-based economic growth, to develop information and communication technology- enabled application to improve efficiencies in the agro supply chain in India.

The application tackles supply chain management from profiling of farmer clusters to crop planning, scheduling, tracking and forecasting, the company said. It allows farmers to access technical information including database searches, region-specific weather updates and market information like daily sales volumes and average prices. It minimizes inventory requirements, reduces waste and allows retailers and farmers to be better integrated, the company added.

JuiceCaster Launches in India

Juice Wireless has launched JuiceCaster in India. The application allows anyone with a camera-enabled mobile phone to create and share rich media content. Vodafone, Bharti, Idea agree India tower deal

Mobile services firms Vodafone, Bharti and Idea Cellular have formed an independent company to share 70,000 tower units in India, to help operators save costs and capital.

Vodafone said in a statement on Saturday the new company, Indus Towers, will prove passive infrastructure services to all operators on a non-discriminatory basis.

Bangalore to become ‘unwired’

The Karnataka government has reportedly given the go-ahead to all the five bidding consortia to roll out of “Unwire Bangalore” in a phased manner. Three of the bidders have started deploying the required infrastructure and services will be rolled out in 2007.
