Spice Opens Global Office in Singapore

Spice Global LogoAfter scouring the world, Spice Global, an Indian telecommunication and entertainment conglomerate, has picked Singapore for its global office, the company announced Thursday.

Spice Global Chairman Dr B.K. Modi said the city-state was chosen for its strategic location as a launching pad for its global business. The company had set aside US$200 million for its operations here, he told a press conference.

Modi said the right place to do business now was in Asia as it had the world’s fastest growing mobile society and was becoming a lucrative market and Singapore had all the world-class facilities and services plus the highly skilled and knowledge-based workers it needed.

Shaadi.com ties knot with Vodafone for mobile access

This tie-up will enable Vodafone customers in India to access Shaadi.com’s matrimonial services on their mobile phones.

‘Shaadi.com on Vodafone’ will enable Vodafone users to search and view profile details of other members without the need to log on to the Internet. Mobile phone users will be able to browse through profiles, express interest in members, accept/ decline interest sent to them by other members and send personalized messages to prospective matches.

Future Group planning franchise mobile operator business

future groupDiversified Indian conglomerate the Future Group plans to enter the fast-growing mobile services space as a franchisee for network operators, it said, and is in talks with several firms for a potential launch next year.

“We are not in a hurry,” Chief Executive Kishore Biyani said in a monthly newsletter. “We have just begun talking with some network operators.”

The Future Group, which has interests in retail, real estate, insurance, financial services and logistics, has appointed consultancy McKinsey & Co and UK’s Value Partners Group as advisers for its telecom plans, it said.

Mobile learning “what an idea”

mobile learningIf you find classroom teaching boring or computer sessions a little too tiring then it’s time to break the mould and switch over to learning on the go! Now, you can take lessons in maths, English and science and also do your training on your mobile and PDAs. And what more, you can also take your preparatory tests, such as CAT and IIT-JEE, on your handset. Some firms, such as EnableM, Tata Interactive, 24X7 Learning, Airtel, IMS and NIIT, are working overtime to make this possible.

While companies are offering small training modules for employees, coaching and content development institutes in the education space are tying up with mobile operators to offer such services. EnableM, a mobile content distribution firm, for one, has tied up with Harper Collins, Britannica for content aggregation and dissemination. It also has institutional tie-ups with University of Florida, Haifa University, Israel, CDAC, Media Lab Asia to deliver content and basic course modules on maths, English, science. A new entrant in the mobile learning space, it launched a module — maths for mobile — four months back.

VAS, Rs 20000cr industry in India by 2015 : VAS Asia ‘08

The Indian Value Added Services (VAS) is expected to log in a turnover of over Rs 20,000 crore by the year 2015 noted telecom experts during the, 4th International Conference & Exhibition of VAS Asia 2008. The event was organized by Bharat Exhibition Pvt Ltd.

Currently the industry which is pegged around a revenue of US $1.2 billion will see major growth in the music and mobile gaming segments suggests a PricewaterhouseCoopers report. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers for the moment, the Indian VAS industry is being driven by SMS with about 44% of the share, followed by new applications Ringtones & RBTs, GPRS, CLI and other VAS.
