What exactly is 3G
3G is short for third-generation mobile telephony services.

3G phones work in higher bandwidths of 15-20 MHz. Currently mobile phones work on 2G or 2.5G, and use 30-200 KHz bandwidth. Bandwidth is a measure of the width of a range of frequencies used while transferring data from one point to another and is measured in hertz.

Yahoo! Go 3.0 Beta : More Indian, more intelligent

Yahoo MobileYahoo! launched oneSearch with voice recognition system in India and Singapore. Henceforth, mobile users can speak out their search key word and oneSearch can show up the results based on just a voice input. The product has been developed after working on respective local Indian and Singaporean accents.

In India, people are still not as comfortable with the keys as they are with voice when it comes to mobile interactions, pointed out Prashant Mehta, vice president, head, Advertiser and Publisher group, International Emerging Markets, Yahoo!.

Yahoo! also announced the localized versions of Yahoo Go 3.0 (its flagship mobile offering) for India, Australia and SE Asia, along with new mobile widgets and a MTV Asia mobile widget for APAC.

IBM lab working on Spoken Web project

IBM logoIf researchers at IBM India Research Labs (IRL) have their way, the innovative features they have developed for mobile phones will help people access services using speech interface.

Alongside, the software designed at IRL will help people with mobiles find plumbers, carpenters and, possibly, even doctors located nearby. The Director of IBM IRL Director, Dr Guruduth Banavar, said the research work related to mobile phones seeks to empower people, who have no access to personal computers, with the means to surf the Web using speech.

The research work is part of the Mobile Web Initiative, which is being led from India and incubated in other IBM Labs, and includes the Spoken Web — voice-enabled mobile commerce.

Poor man`s BlackBerry services

Netcore logoUsers of entry-level handsets will soon be able to avail of push-mail services, with the Rajesh Jain-promoted Netcore Solutions close to launching the service in India.

Push-mail service providers charge between Rs 800 and Rs 1,200 a month and usually require high-end data-enabled handsets that cost Rs 12,000 and more. The launch, expected in a couple of weeks, comes as the government has been seeking legal intrusion (monitoring of data) of BlackBerry services and demanding that Research In Motion, Canadian owners of the service, moves its servers India.

RIM finally speaks on security issue

Security RIMResearch in Motion (RIM), the company that provides BlackBerry service in India has asked Indian officials to take action against other service providers with similar encryption. The company said that lowering the encryption level of BlackBerry services in India will not solve the security concerns.

The Canadian company, RIM, has around 100,000 customer base in the country. The premium services offered by company have been severely affected due to its wrangling with Department of Telecommunication (DoT) over encryption level.

RIM has said that it was being singled out by DoT officials and said that there were several other companies providing similar services to customers with similar encryption level.

Mobile tracker software providers in India

Xora Software Systems logo For the last five years, Pramod Jajoo, the managing director of mobile resource management (MRM) applications provider Xora Software Systems, hawked his wares in the United States and Australia. An ex-employee of Oracle, Jajoo felt that consumers there were willing to try new technologies and so were more receptive to his software to track mobile workers and vehicles.

But in the last couple of months, his focus has shifted to India. To tap the booming domestic market, Xora struck its first Indian deal last month with push-to-talk (PTT) service provider Procall Pvt Ltd. PTT is a radio frequency system that allows many users of a closed user group to communicate with each other at the push of a button.
