Nokia : First Phone maker to add Energy Saving Alerts to Mobile Phones
Nokia has re-launched some of its mobile phones that include alerts encouraging people to unplug the charger once the battery is full.
Nokia hopes that this move will help to save enough electricity to power around 85,000 homes in a year. This is need of time at least in Power hungry Maharashtra.
However, it must be noted that these alerts on Nokia’s mobile phones happen to be just one of a series of environmental initiatives that mobile manufacturers, led by Nokia, agreed to take action on in 2007.
According to Kirsi Sormunen, Vice President of Environmental Affairs at Nokia, “Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket.”
Nokia has set its goals to further reduce the energy consumption of its chargers. In fact, by 2010, the company aims to have reduced by an additional 50%, the amount of electricity a charger consumes whilst still plugged into the mains but not the phone.
I would personally be interested to see the effect by 2010.
