There will be more than 140 million subscribers to social networking sites who are able to access such resources via their mobile phones by 2013, according to market analyst ABI Research.

As a result of this, there will be “significant opportunities” in mobile advertising, as well as in content sales, the organisation notes. Subscriber numbers will increase at a “relatively modest” pace for the next three or four years, before accelerating “sharply”, comments Michael Wolf, research director at ABI Research.

“That uptake is based on assumed acceptance levels in the giant emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China,” he adds.

In addition, the company cites a previous end-user study it carried out which suggested mobile users of social networks are likely to consumer two or three times as much digital content - such as music, videos and games - than their “asocial” peers.

The research follows the publication of an article on web resource PC World which urged marketers to make the most of new developments in internet technology, as well as in search engines.
